Julien Saudubray - 2023

Watching #85

Born in 1985, Paris, France. Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Julien Saudubray’s practice encompasses painting, installation and performance. Only recently has he returned to painting, feeling inspired to formulate a new visual language by experimenting with alchemy and intuitive gestures. By releasing formal constraints and stripping painting down to its purest and most austere forms, he allows his canvases, with their sweeping, undulating shapes and warm, bright colours, to come to life.

For Saudubray, painting is a protocol-driven process, a mechanical sweep of the surface that is as monotonous as it is captivating. Naturally, an arch form began to emerge, and soon an oval. Exhausting this primary figuration, the oval gradually transformed into his signature shape: a leaf, a canoe, or an eye. Through gesture the artist seeks for the forms to impose themselves on him, unpredicted and spontaneous—repeating a gesture until something emerges, until the painting almost creates itself.
