Hadrien du Roy - 2024

Untitled

Born in 1984, Brussels, Belgium. Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Hadrien du Roy’s paintings blend the abstract and figurative, inviting viewers to explore their own perceptions. His landscapes act as mirrors for escapism, encouraging us to look beyond the visible horizon. Using a meticulous layering technique, du Roy creates dynamic, evocative images that resonate with natural phenomena.

Playing upon pareidolia, the cognitive phenomenon of interpreting a nebulous visual presence as something recognisable, du Roy creates works that bring together undefined forms and apparitional outlines, existing to be engaged with and completed by the viewer. His paintings act as a fertile space, allowing for the projection of our lived experiences, memories, psychologies, and desires.

Humankind tends towards an urge to grasp, control, and understand the visible world. Hadrien du Roy’s paintings suggest that we may be able to rejoice in falling short of such ambitions, instead using our visual capabilities as a mirror for escapism, seeking that which lies behind the horizon.
