Elisabeth Van Vyve - 2004
Born in 1957 in Antwerp, Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.
As a child, Elisabeth Van Vyve was diagnosed with various developmental disorders, including autism. Hearing difficulties affected her speech and made verbal interaction difficult. Communicating first through means of drawings and basic text compositions, she quickly came to use photography as a preferred way of connecting with her environment. With a preference for disposable cameras, capturing images and making albums became a daily ritual, enabling a unique narration and exploration of her environment.
Photo album provides a fascinating insight into Van Vyve’s personal imagery where her distinctive sense of composition and aesthetic comes to light, offering a prism through which she sees the world. Her creative process is a visceral one, enabling her to connect with the world around her. It is also a solitary one, with no thought of an audience. Her photo albums, abundant and methodical, are a nostalgic recalling of a world in which images were treasured as rare and one-of-a-kind.
