Un Hiver à Athènes #8

Born in 1967, Lyon, France. Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Lionel Estève has spent the last thirty years exploring different materials and techniques, working with glass, frescoes, ceramics, watercolour, collages, and sculpture. Like an illuminator working on a manuscript, he strives to go beyond the simple surface of things. Delicately combining informality and fragility, his work offers a sense of wonder, awakening the perception of an infinite reality by revealing a space that is palpable.

This series of embroidered silk pieces emerged from a simple gesture and happenstance. Working with leftover organza, the artist began creating scarf-like forms, subtly stitched with coloured thread to preserve their natural softness. Developed during a stay in Athens, each piece became a visual diary, capturing fleeting impressions of the city’s light, textures, and contradictions. Echoing the spirit of Béla Bartók’s reworking of folk traditions, Estève blends personal experience with found cultural forms—transforming everyday observations into quiet, poetic compositions rooted in place and memory.
