Panos Profitis - 2021

Bucolic Drama prop

Born in 1988, Athens, Greece. Lives and works in Athens, Greece.

Panos Profitis’ work is rooted in the urban landscape as well as more traditional references. His multidisciplinary artistic practice expands across sculpture, kinetic installations and performances, offering the viewer multi-layered narratives of materiality. Playing upon intense theatricality, the performative gesture is crucial to his work, offering dual or even ambivalent interpretations to the viewer.

These two works from the Bucolic Drama series intertwine personal memory, mythology, and ritual. The photograph, set in the artist’s ancestral landscape near Mount Parnassus, features a masked figure surrounded by heirloom textiles crafted by the artist’s refugee grandmothers. The setting, a Mycenaean tomb, blends ancient traces with familial legacy. The accompanying goat mask echoes the region’s pastoral life and theatrical traditions. Referencing the etymology of “tragedy” (trágōidía—goat song), it evokes ancient rites, linking nature, myth, and performance into a layered narrative of identity and belonging.
