Vasilis Papageorgiou - 2023

07:17 to 19:13

Born in 1991 in Athens, Greece. Lives and works in Athens, Greece.

Vasilis Papageorgiou creates sculptures and installations inspired by social spaces like hotels, bars, and streets, often devoid of human figures to evoke an uncanny absence. His work, especially resonant in the post-pandemic era, examines leisure, identity, and belonging. By juxtaposing familiar social elements with minimalism, he invites reflection on human interaction, social gathering, and class.

The ongoing series Ceramic Sunset is based on photos Vasilis took at sunset—the time of day, coinciding with the end of work, where one is invited to momentarily daydream. He captures this moment of respite through a laborious artistic process of colouring and shaping clay. Once completed, the work borrows its title from the exact time the sun sets on the day it is finished. Thus, each of these ceramic sunsets refers to two unique sunsets: the one captured by the image and the other that marks the completion of the artwork.
