Women who defied war

Clare Mulley on the hidden histories of WWII’s fearless female operatives

TheMerode is honored to host award-winning historian and biographer Clare Mulley for an in-depth conversation. This event is part of our ongoing series exploring the role of the unconventional in times of conflict and the lessons history offers for today’s challenges.

Mulley’s work brings to life the stories of extraordinary women who defied expectations during moments of extreme historical pressure, particularly during the Second World War. From spies and resistance fighters to test pilots and humanitarians, her protagonists were bold, complex, and often ahead of their time.

Clare will reflect on how these women navigated danger, made difficult moral choices, and used their individuality to shape the course of history. The conversation will also consider the modern-day resonance of these stories, including what we can learn from their courage and unconventional strategies.

This conversation is a must for anyone interested in history, remarkable life paths, leadership under pressure, and the power of defying the status quo.
