Urban food insecurity: the cases of Brussels and London

A major societal conversation at the crossroads of social justice and ecological transition, focused on building fairer food systems.

The first seats will be available on July 18 at 6 PM.

The remaining seats will be released on September 12 at 6 PM.

Over three-quarters of the world’s 2.2 billion moderately or severely food-insecure people—1.7 billion—live in urban and peri-urban areas.

In the last five years, urban food insecurity has worsened. Covid-19 sent food bank demand soaring. The war in Ukraine drove up prices and caused shortages. Today, more and more urban residents struggle to access food that is healthy, sustainable, and nutritious. Now a public health and welfare concern, urban malnutrition is tackled mostly by charities powered by volunteers, private donors, and with government support.

To explore this urgent issue, we welcome Aileen Thomson, Head of Philanthropy at The Felix Project, London’s largest food redistribution charity — which delivered over 38 million meals in 2024 — and Amandine Englebert, Director of 4WINGS, a foundation promoting access to quality food for all by supporting innovative solutions and building alliances that advance a food system grounded in health, social equity, and ecological sustainability. The conversation will be moderated by Pierre-Arnold Camphuis, Benelux Director of the Epic Foundation.

Join us and be part of this pressing conversation on how cities can tackle food insecurity and build fairer, more resilient food systems.
