Join us for the premiere of Blind Runner by Iranian playwright Amir Reza Koohestani.
Calling all theater-enthusiasts and curious minds: join TheMerode for a second theater outing at Kunstenfestivaldesarts.
In collaboration with the festival, TheMerode has selected two plays highlighting social issues specific to Japan and Iran: Family Portrait by Midori Kurata (May, 12) and Blind Runner by Amir Reza Koohestani (May 16). For our second theater night at Kunstenfestivaldesarts, discover Blind Runner by playwright Amir Reza Koohestani.
Premiering in Brussels during Kustenfestivaldesarts, Blind Runner reflects on the contemporary Iranian society through the story of a man and his wife, a political prisoner in Iran, who run every night on both sides of the prison wall.
Prior to her arrest, they had been training for months to leave Iran and reach England by running through the Channel Tunnel during a specific five-hour gap.
In a precise interlocking mechanism, their breathless dialogues intersect with their interior monologues, where classical Persian poetry echoes all possible transactions in the darkness of a night.
Amir Reza Koohestani was born in 1978 in Shiraz, Iran. His early passion for cinema and for writing (essays, short stories, screenplays) led to his directing his first play when he was but 21. Since then, he has traveled the world with his company, the Mehr Theatre Group. His many adaptations and creations have led to the development of a unique style, at once poetic and critical, a departure from the naturalist tradition of Iranian theater. After presenting Hearing in 2016 and Summerless in 2018.
