Theater night with Kunstenfestivaldesarts

Join us for a theater night and discover Family Portrait by Midori Kurata, one of the most promising playwrights of the Japanese contemporary scene.

Calling all theater-enthusiasts and curious minds: join TheMerode for a theater outing at Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

In collaboration with the festival, TheMerode has selected two plays highlighting social issues specific to Japan and Iran: Family Portrait by Midori Kurata (May, 12) and Blind Runner by Amir Reza Koohestani (May 16). For our first theater night at Kunstenfestivaldesarts, discover Family Portrait by Japanese playwright Midori Kurata.

The pitch? “It would be a shame to die but not have subscribed to a life insurance”. With this play, Kurata draws the portrait of a Japanese family tangled up with their needs and desires and the perspective of the 5 million yens the father’s death would bring to the family.

Written by Kurata after having met an insurance broker, the play questions with caustic humour the profit to be made from death and echoes the financial crisis in Japan, which pushed some people to take their own lives so that their families could benefit from their insurance.

Midori Kurata
Graduated from Kyoto University of Art and Design (now Kyoto University of the Arts), Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Midori Kurata works as a director, choreographer and dancer based in Kyoto. She is an artist who works closely with people with complex backgrounds, such as residents of drug rehabilitation facilities or the elderly living in a community with a complex history and from those realities she strives to create worlds built on fictional elements.

Kunstenfestivaldesarts is an international performing arts festival dedicated to contemporary theater, dance, performance and visual arts. Every year, it takes place in Brussels during three weeks in May. The festival invites artists from all over the world and Belgium to redefine the boundaries of theater, dance and performance in over 30 venues in and around Brussels.
