Five courtroom battles that reshaped the boundaries of artistic freedom.
Some works haven’t just shocked or mesmerised, they’ve landed their creators in court. Since the 19th century, art history has been marked by landmark trials where creativity clashed with morality, politics, or power. These legal dramas weren’t just about law, they exposed the fault lines of their time, forcing society to confront what it could tolerate, celebrate, or silence.
In this lecture, art historian and Ts’Art co-founder Stéphanie Breydel revisits five infamous cases where art became evidence and artists became defendants. From censorship to public outrage, these trials reveal how works now revered were once reviled—and how each verdict, in its own way, reshaped the boundaries of artistic freedom.
A story of scandal, resistance, and the enduring tension between expression and control.
