Salon Littéraire: “Do You Speak Literature?”

Once a month, TheMerode invites you to experience a new format: the Literary Salon by Elliot Ibouzidene. Here, the notion of a “salon” regains its original meaning — an intimate, contemporary gathering devoted to literature, conceived as a living conversation rather than a formal lecture.

Each session opens with an introductory moment (reading, excerpt, or conceptual perspective), followed by a tea timewith tea, coffee, and mignardises, creating the conditions for a relaxed and collective exchange. Participants are invited to bring a book — a novel, poetry, theatre, essay, or literary interview, recent or not — which will serve as a starting point for discussion. Everyone is welcome to share, in a few words, why they chose this book, when they read it, and the place it holds in their reading life today.

By inviting emerging writers from the Belgian and French scenes, this cycle seeks to place books and literature back at the centre of contemporary cultural life. Reading today can be understood as a gentle form of resistance: a space for slowness, attention, and critical thought. The Literary Salon offers precisely this — a moment of “time in its pure state,” where knowledge, curiosity, and shared experience come together.

The Literary Salon takes place at TheMerode (Rue aux Laines) in an intimate setting.

Always on Fridays, once a month.

Elliot Ibouzidene

After studying law and political science in France, Elliot Ibouzidene moved to Belgium to pursue a Master’s degree in International Relations at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Following a period at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels, he was admitted to ENSAV La Cambre in the Master’s programme Texts and Literary Creation, where he is currently working on the writing of a novel. The author of several texts, including a first auto-theoretical collection, Fragment(s), his debut novel Fashionably Late is currently in the process of publication. A bookseller, lecturer, and Head of Communication at Filigranes by Mayfair in Brussels, he regularly publishes short literary reviews on social media and takes part in literary events. Among his recent projects is the creation of a French-language writing residency, scheduled for 2026 in collaboration with ENSAV La Cambre. Before defining himself as a writer, he considers himself above all a reader. Deeply engaged with literature and contemporary art, his interests lie at the crossroads of poetry and philosophy, journalism and narrative, pop culture and French Theory, as well as French and American fiction.
