Rethinking depression and the chemical imbalance myth

A conversation with Joanna Moncrieff on the science that dismantles psychiatry’s most pervasive narrative

For decades, we’ve been told that depression is caused by a “chemical imbalance” in the brain—and that antidepressants are the solution. But what if this narrative is not only flawed, but has shaped an entire culture of treatment based on unproven assumptions?

Joanna Moncrieff, Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London and NHS consultant psychiatrist, has spent her career challenging orthodox views in psychiatry. Her landmark 2022 review dismantled the serotonin theory of depression, sparking international debate and shifting how we think about antidepressants. In her latest book, Chemically Imbalanced: The Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin Myth, she explores how science, industry, and culture combined to create one of modern medicine’s most enduring myths—and what a better future for mental health might look like.
