A new series exploring whether today’s crises expose deeper flaws in how leadership is understood and practised—and where it needs to evolve.
The world as we know it is changing. Global challenges, from climate change and inequality to pandemics, migration, polarization, and the erosion of democratic values, are interconnected crises, ultimately reflecting a collective leadership failure.
In this context, TheMerode launches ‘Re-Defining Leadership: From Power & Egos to Impact & Purpose’, a series of conversations led by Gaia van der Esch, executive, policy expert and author of Leading Our Way.
For this first edition, we will be focusing on European leadership with Ann Mettler, former Director-General at the European Commission. She will reflect on more than 25 years at the intersection of European policy, innovation and long-term strategy. Having advised global decision-makers and contributed to debates on industrial policy, Ann Mettler brings a perspective driven by curiosity and impact rather than short-term fixes.
The conversation will move from the personal to the structural: how leadership emerges, where it falters, and how should Europe rethink its leadership model to address its systemic issues ? If leadership is part of the problem, what would it take for it to become part of the solution?
