A Journey into Brussels’ Art Nouveau Gems
The Hôtel Max Hallet stands as one of the most remarkable and enduring works of Victor Horta, a master of Art Nouveau. Built between 1903 and 1905 for his friend, the lawyer and politician Max Hallet, this exceptional townhouse perfectly illustrates the maturity and refinement of Horta’s architectural vision.
Behind its elegant and relatively restrained façade — a departure from the exuberance of his earlier works — unfolds a sequence of spaces designed as a true Gesamtkunstwerk. From the carriage entrance to the monumental entrance hall, delicately adorned with roses and thorns by decorative artist Victor Van Dyck, the house reveals a harmonious dialogue between noble materials, light, and form. The sculptural staircase, both theatrical and fluid, orchestrates the circulation of space with poetic clarity, guiding visitors through the different levels of the residence.
Listed as a protected monument since 1975, the Hôtel Max Hallet is unique among Horta’s creations in that it has retained its original function as a private family home. Carefully restored over time, it continues to be preserved with great attention by its current owner.
Among its many treasures are undulating mosaic floors enriched with Italian marble, intricately crafted stair railings combining wood and metal, a luminous winter garden crowned by a trilobed glass roof with American stained glass that shifts with the light, as well as richly decorated ceilings, floral motifs, tapestries, fine woodwork, and exquisite ironmongery.
The guided tour starts at 15h sharp, we kindly ask you to arrive 10 minutes early, by your own means.
Address: Av. Louise 346, 1000 Bruxelles.
The visit is led by Michel Gilbert, a passionate collector and devoted connoisseur of Victor Horta’s work. As the owner of the house, where he lives with his family, Michel offers a unique and personal perspective, sharing both the history of the residence and the ongoing restoration efforts required to preserve such an architectural gem.
