What are DNA, RNA and epigenetics, and how do they control the characteristics that determine who we are?
Discover how variations in our DNA relate to differences in traits and diseases, and delve into the genomic revolution that is shifting medical genetics from diagnosis to a driving force behind personalized medicine. Professor Callewaert will cover the fundamentals of genetics (what is DNA, what is RNA, what is epigenetics?) but also show how we use genetic testing in the clinic and beyond. Think testing babies for rare but treatable diseases, DNA analysis in forensic science and the danger of possibly dark applications like genomic ethnic profiling.

Prof. dr. Bert Callewaert is a clinical geneticist and pediatrician at Ghent University Hospital and serves as a full professor in medical genetics at Ghent University. There, he leads the department of Biomolecular Medicine, guiding his research team to understand how genomic variations influence the assembly and stability of the extracellular matrix, the space between cells in our bodies. This understanding is crucial for determining how the genome affects various tissues and organs, including the skin, arteries, skeleton, and brain. His team applies this knowledge to contribute to treatments for both rare genetic diseases and more common complex disorders.
In addition to his research, prof. Callewaert holds the presidency of the Belgian Society of Human Genetics and participates in several international organizations that support patients with genetic disorders (Cutis laxa international, A Twist of Fate-ATS, Myhre board). He also plays a significant role in organizing patient care, both nationally and internationally, through networks like ERN-Skin, ITHACA, VNZZ-huid, and the Clinical Genome Resource.
