La Table du 9e Art: Graphic novels, a mirror of the world

A lunch at the heart of graphic novels, a space where images and words come together to tell stories transcending borders and genres.

If the comic book genre was for too long associated with childhood, it is now rightfully recognised as a powerful, universal, and inclusive language.

We are fortunate to welcome two endearing and singular personalities from the world of the 9th art:

Sébastien Gnaedig, Editorial Director at Futuropolis, a publisher who, over the last 35 years, has accompanied the publication of many important books. He will explain his role in this adventure and talk about his conception of the publisher's job, a role that is still often misunderstood or fraught with preconceived ideas. He will be joined by Zelba, an author and illustrator with an atypical career path who, in the space of just a few books, has won everyone over with her talent and originality.

In a conversation moderated by Anthony Wolf, Zelba and Sébastien will discuss the state of the market, the values they wish to convey and the place of comics and graphic novels in today's world.

Zelba

Zelba was born in the former FRG in 1973. Before becoming an illustrator, she was world junior rowing champion (coxless pair). In 2019, she joined Futuropolis (‘my dream publishing house’) with an autobiographical story about her experience as a top sportswoman in East Germany at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, 'Dans le même bateau'. Two years later she returned with another autobiographical story, 'Mes mauvaises filles', about the right to die with dignity. With 'Le Grand incident', she offers us a fantasticomic tale about the sexualisation of the female body in art. Zelba moves through the world of comics with a tender yet critical outlook on life.

Sébastien Gnaedig

Since studying for a book trade diploma in Bordeaux, Sébastien Gnaedig has held a number of different positions in comics publishing houses (Les Humanoïdes Associés, Delcourt, Dupuis), always working closely with authors and the production of their titles. Since 2004 he has been Editorial Director of Futuropolis, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary. His editorial approach favours engaging and graphically ambitious stories. Passionate about storytelling, he contributes to enriching the landscape of contemporary comics. Alongside his publishing work, he draws comics based on scripts by Philippe Thirault and Pascal Rabaté. In recent years he has adapted novels by Sorj Chalandon (Profession du Père, Enfant de Salaud) and Gérard Mordillat (Ulysse Nobody). Today, Sébastien continues
