Inside the Queen Elisabeth Competition: A composer’s view

Kris Defoort on crafting the competition’s most challenging piece

This year, the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition is dedicated to piano, and we’re offering our members an exclusive behind-the-scenes look with renowned jazz musician and opera composer Kris Defoort.

As the composer of this year’s top-secret imposed piece for the final round, in a conversation with Sabine Ringelheim from Bx1, Defoort will share his creative process and the unique challenges of writing for a competition. He’ll also reflect on his career, from his time in New York’s jazz scene to winning the International Opera Award for ‘The Time of Our Singing’.

Join us for an evening of insight and music as Defoort plays excerpts, dissects the art of composition, and explores the significance of one of the world’s most demanding piano competitions.
