How to unravel gender stereotypes in museum collections?
The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium present a new display examining gender stereotypes in art, from the virile, aggressive man to the domestic, maternal woman, as well as the figure of the temptress or sinner.
The exhibition Art x Gender, held at the Old Masters Museum, explores how images have reinforced or challenged these representations. Nearly 30 works from the 16th to the 20th century are included, from Lucas Cranach the Elder to Roger Raveel, some shown for the first time.
A guided trail extends the reflection into the permanent collections, encouraging visitors to question stereotypes throughout the museum. The tour will be led by Géraldine Barbery, the exhibition’s co-curator and director of cultural mediation at the MRBAB, reflecting the institution’s broader aim to rethink how its narratives are presented.
