Kendell Geers and Michaël Borremans discuss the trap of beauty
Join Art Matters host Kendell Geers and Michaël Borremans for an after work aperitif as they discuss “French Painting,” the artist’s ninth solo presentation with David Zwirner and his first at the Paris gallery, marking his first solo show in France in twenty years.
The exhibition is an ironic homage to the French pictorial tradition, subtly unsettling its legacy. Across the works in this exhibition, beauty emerges as both seductive and disturbing, suspended between tenderness and nihilism. The new paintings possess a haunting relevance to our time, embodying timeless human concerns - power, vulnerability, ambiguity and identity, probing the instability of meaning itself. When meaning is withheld, power shifts and that's why Art Matters.
Borremans will be joined by special guest Elise Caluwaerts for this edition of Art Matters. Caluwaerts is a world renowned Belgian soprano, cultural entrepreneur and arts leader known for her versatility across classical and contemporary music. She has performed on major international stages, building a reputation for combining technical precision with expressive depth. Beyond her career as a singer, she is also recognized for her work in arts management and innovation, contributing to the development of new artistic projects and collaborations
