Cellist Marie Hallynck on the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the instrument’s rising presence, and the making of a musician.
In 2026, the Queen Elisabeth Competition celebrates its 75th anniversary — a moment that also casts renewed light on the cello. Long considered the orchestra’s inner voice, the instrument has gained greater prominence in recent decades, not least since the introduction of the Competition’s cello discipline.
Few musicians have witnessed this evolution as closely as Marie Hallynck. As a performer, teacher, and jury member, she has observed the Competition from multiple vantage points, navigating the delicate boundary between interpretation and evaluation.
In conversation with Axelle Thiry, host and programmer at Musiq’3, Marie Hallynck will reflect on what distinguishes the cello discipline, why competitions continue to shape the landscape of classical music, and how her own artistic path has unfolded — from sources of inspiration to the enduring relationship with her instrument.
Beyond virtuosity, the evening offers a glimpse into the inner life of musical practice.
