THE WORKSPACE

Fascinated by the mysteries of the darkroom from his early teens, Jacques Vilet (1940, Belgium) studied to become a sales engineer, which led him to work for a polling company in Brussels.

In 1969, he chose instead to devote himself to artistic photography, while teaching mathematics part-time. During this twelve-year period, he continued his self-taught exploration of photography, notably through courses at the Rencontres d'été in Arles (a.o. 1977, Paul Caponigro) and in Rochester-USA (1980, Nathan Lyons). He has often worked with Jean-Claude Lemagny at the BNF (Paris).

His involvement in the founding of the Ateliers de la rue Voot photography workshop enabled him to teach the history of photography, to learn how to evaluate work and to teach the Zone System technique (by Ansel Adams). From 1981 to 2003, he taught photography at the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (Erg) in Brussels. He has been a member of the Académie Royale de Belgique (Classe des Arts) since 2007. Since 1978, he has exhibited his work in Belgium and abroad
