Cornelius Annor - 2022
CIAO
Cornelius Annor (1990, Ghana) started painting at a very young age, largely influenced by his sculptor father. He is a figurative painter who depicts everyday life, often drawing on childhood memories and family history (weddings, christenings, birthdays, etc.): looking at Annor's body of work is like turning the pages of a family album.
Inspired by the practice of British and Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare, his unique method of transferring fabric - which involves placing it on the canvas for several hours - leaves a faded remnant of the motif on the canvas, like a sign of collective memory.
On the right-hand side of the composition stands a man in a blue shirt holding a video camera. This is Mr Kwame Amponsah, alias Kwame Photooo, a well-known photographer in Accra who attends all family events during festive periods, becoming like a guardian of lost moments.
Annor established ‘C.Annor studio’ in his hometown, a space dedicated to encouraging and supporting young talents and emerging artists. His work has been extensively exhibited throughout West Africa and in the United States, and recently was acquired by the Norton Museum of Art, Florida and the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
