Kati Heck - 2019
THE WINE CELLAR
Kati Heck (1979, Germany) is known for her intense yet enigmatic large-scale paintings merging Realism with art historical references ranging from Surrealism to Social Realism in order to create an extraordinarily unique body of work.
Der süssliche Erinnerungsmehrwert (2015) shows a man served coffee by an ostrich; his arm dissolving into the wallpaper as he reaches to take it exemplifies the dreamlike fantasy worlds Heck conjures.
She will often explore the same theme across a number of different works, as seen in the recurring horse motif show in the works featured in the “Bonnie Bonne Bon” exhibition. In Bonnie Bonne Bon - come on sense! (2021), a white horse—an animal traditionally used to symbolise masculine power—comes to represent feminine resistance as it is shown with numerous human breasts and surrounded by followers. Heck’s practice also involves sculpture, film, performance, and textile-based works.
