Art Matters 2026: Destabilization, Disruption and Degrowth
Few people are better positioned to dissect the global art market than Marc Spiegler. As global director of Art Basel from 2012 to 2022, he drove the fair’s aggressive expansion into a five-city-a-year operation spanning Basel, Miami Beach, Paris, Hong Kong, and Doha, a run that made him one of the contemporary art world’s most influential power brokers.
Since leaving Art Basel, Spiegler has continued to shape the conversation from Zurich, working independently across a range of cultural projects and writing candidly, sometimes controversially, about the very system he helped build.
The art world is now facing what looks like an existential reckoning, marked by a wave of gallery bankruptcies and downsizing. Pace CEO Marc Glimcher, who recently cut 50 artists from the gallery’s roster, put it starkly: the traditional gallery model is “not only broken, it’s unfixable.”
In recent New York Times essays, Spiegler frames the crisis differently, as a structural mismatch. The art world’s explosive growth in museums, biennials, and fairs was never backed by comparable growth in the underlying market.
The bubble burst as collectors shifted from old-school patronage to speculation, treating art as an asset class, a shift that pushed galleries into defensive, trust-eroding practices that only deepened the damage.
Spiegler’s Art Matters keynote widens that diagnosis beyond the gallery system, situating it within the broader forces reshaping the art world at large: generational wealth transfer changing who collects and why, and social media rewriting how art gets discovered and valued.
Can an industry built on scale and expansion actually embrace degrowth? What do younger gallerists, who inherited a playbook that no longer works, owe to a model built by people like Spiegler? And what does “disruption” look like when it’s diagnosed by someone who helped construct the system now being disrupted?
Join Marc Spiegler and Art Matters host Kendell Geers for the season’s most candid, no-holds-barred conversation: why ART MATTERS when the price of art and the value of art have come apart?
