Join us for an exclusive Curated Spirits Tasting at TheOtium Bar, hosted by JML in collaboration with Jean-Robert, and discover the world of whisky and spirits through stories, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Whisky and spirits are more than a drink. They are embodiments of culture and moments of otium — meaningful leisure: an invitation to pause, reflect, converse and step away, for a moment, from the rhythm of productivity. From the historic traditions of Scottish whisky to the meticulous craftsmanship of Japan, spirits carry with them centuries of savoir-faire, culture and storytelling.

The experience will begin with an introduction to Jean-Robert and his professional journey, offering guests an insight into his expertise and passion for the world of spirits.

Jean-Robert will then take guests through the history of whisky, exploring its origins, cultural evolution and the traditions that have shaped the spirit across different countries and generations.

The experience will culminate in a curated tasting of rare and exclusive whiskies, with Jean-Robert guiding guests through each pour and sharing the stories, craftsmanship and savoir-faire behind the spirits.

More than a tasting, this intimate experience invites guests to discover whisky through a deeper cultural lens — as a spirit shaped by people, places, traditions and time, while creating space for conversation, curiosity and meaningful leisure.

Jean-Robert Lalancette

Jean-Robert Lalancette is a former academic and historian of international politics whose career took an unexpected—and rather delicious—turn following a formative encounter with a bottle of Cockburn’s 1955 Port at Oxford. Inspired by this moment, he immersed himself in the world of wine and spirits, joining tasting societies and managing his college bar as a passionate pursuit. What began as a hobby soon evolved into a full-fledged career. Over the years, Jean-Robert has developed an extensive and nuanced understanding of the drinks world, becoming a dedicated advocate for the thoughtful enjoyment of fine wines, spirits, cocktails, and food. He encourages incorporating these pleasures—always in moderation—into everyday life as a way to enrich and elevate it. He began his professional journey in London, one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse drinks markets, where he honed his expertise. His deep knowledge and discerning palate led him to a role as a commercial buyer for a specialist retail chain catering to an elite clientele, including Masters of Wine, international celebrities, high-net-worth individuals, and acclaimed television chefs. Now based in Brussels, Jean-Robert works with one of Belgium’s leading wine and spirits importers. In parallel, he advises high-end bars and Michelin-starred restaurants, bringing his passion and expertise to some of the most refined tables in the industry.
