The new faces of cults

We tend to imagine cults through familiar images: charismatic gurus, isolated communities, and followers cut off from the outside world. Yet reality is often far more complex, and increasingly difficult to recognise.

Over the past decades, sectarian movements have evolved alongside society itself. While some retain traditional religious structures, others emerge in less obvious places, from personal development programmes and wellness communities to online networks and hybrid ideological movements. 

What defines a cult? How can it be recognised? What can be done when someone falls under its influence?

These questions will be explored by Kerstine Vanderput, Director of the CIAOSN, the Belgian Information and Advisory Centre on Harmful Sectarian Organisations, and journalist and documentary maker Manon Mottard, creator of the investigative series ‘Le Piège: dans les coulisses du développement personnel’.

Together, they will examine how cults are changing, what distinguishes them from other forms of collective belief, and the often profound consequences they can have on those who fall under their influence.
