In eight years and fifty-two countries, journalist Frédéric Martel conducted nearly two thousand interviews investigating the coalition against liberal democracy.
The West has spent recent years defending its values against an unusually varied set of attackers. Frédéric Martel spent eight years chasing that pattern, from Moscow's ideologues to Steve Bannon's allies, and the result is the essay 'Occidents. Enquête sur nos ennemis'.
Rather than reading this war through a strictly geographic or ideological lens, his investigation reveals the sheer multiplicity of the West's adversaries, both external and internal, and questions the fragility of liberal democracies at a moment of global realignment.
Looking closely at these wars of influence and the fractures running through Western societies themselves, the discussion, moderated by Wilson Fache, will offer a framework for understanding the moment and will open up questions about the future of democracy.
The evening will conclude with a book signing of ‘Occidents - Enquête sur nos ennemis!’ (Plon, 2026) with Frédéric Martel.
