The bread experience: History, culture & artisanal tasting

A  journey through food history, featuring a talk with Peter Scholliers and a tasting of Brussels’ finest breads

Bread has nourished societies for centuries, shaping economies, cultures, and daily life. But how did this humble staple evolve from a necessity to an artisanal obsession? And what does its history tell us about our changing world?

Join us for an insightful event with historian Peter Scholliers, author of A History of Bread: Consumers, Bakers and Public Authorities since the 18th Century. Scholliers will explore the complex story of bread—its role in shaping societies, the impact of industrialization, and the recent resurgence of artisanal baking.

Following the conversation, we invite you to a curated degustation of some of the finest breads from Brussels’ best bakeries. Experience the textures, flavors, and craftsmanship behind the loaves that define today’s bread renaissance.
