Private Tour - 'Le Musée des Musées' at Art et Marges Museum

As Part of its Cultural Programme, TheMerode Invites its Members to Discover Exhibitions within Brussels’ Contemporary Art Scene.

Join us for a guided visit and discussion at the Art et marges musée, dedicated to the exhibition Le Musée des Musées — an immersive and thought-provoking exploration of the codes, narratives, and experiences that shape the museum world today.

Conceived as a “museum within museums,” the exhibition invites visitors to journey through a variety of museum typologies, from natural history museums and botanical gardens to folklore museums, fashion displays, white cubes, and even a planetarium. Blending art brut and contemporary art, the exhibition challenges the traditional frameworks through which art is presented, perceived, and interpreted.

Bringing together 66 artists from diverse backgrounds and practices, Le Musée des Musées creates a rich dialogue between outsider art, immersive scenography, and contemporary creation. The exhibition features major artists such as Hans Op de Beeck and Seyni Awa Camara, alongside numerous emerging and self-taught creators.

Throughout the visit, participants will discover a scenography designed as a total museum experience, where playful installations, interactive spaces, and unexpected juxtapositions encourage reflection on what the context of exhibition itself “does” to an artwork. From kinetic fairground sculptures by Georges Counasse to the silent monochromatic worlds of Hans Op de Beeck, from Naomi Gilon’s ceramic fashion objects to the collective vegetal universe of Botanicum,um,m, the exhibition unfolds as a poetic and immersive exploration of imagination, materiality, and perception.

Particular attention is also given to participation and inclusivity. The exhibition incorporates spaces dedicated to free play and collective interaction, inviting visitors to actively engage with the museum environment rather than simply observe it.

Located in the heart of Brussels, the Art et marges musée is dedicated to outsider art and has built, since the 1980s, an international collection of more than 4,500 works created outside the traditional contemporary art circuit. Through its exhibitions, the museum continuously questions the boundaries and definitions of art itself.

An inspiring gathering designed for art lovers, creatives, curators, and anyone curious about how museums shape the way we experience art, culture, and collective imagination.
