Health & Human : Where health meets technology

Flanders Technology & Innovation Brussels brings professionals together at TheMerode to explore how technology and science are shaping the future of healthcare.

Programme for the Day

The programme opens with a keynote by Jan Steyaert, Professor of Structural Biology at VUB. Drawing on experience spanning both academic laboratories and the business world, he looks at the funding mechanisms for fundamental research, the points of friction that often arise between the laboratory and the market, and what could help reinvigorate this process.

Erik Janssen, Vice President of Digital Health Innovation at UCB, draws on his experience within a major European biopharmaceutical company to explain what integrating digital healthcare really requires in practice, from innovation processes and data infrastructure to patient relationships.

This is followed by pitches from Pierre Cherelle (CEO of Axiles Bionics), whose company develops bionic limbs that enable amputees to achieve movements that are closer to natural motion; Bram Vanderborght (Professor at BruBotics, VUB), who designs robots that work collaboratively with humans rather than independently of them; Seppe Terryn (VUB/imec), who focuses on soft robotics and self-healing materials; An Jacobs (VUB/FARI), who researches the design of AI systems and their intended users; and Ségolène Martin (CEO of KANTIFY), who explores the application of machine learning to the discovery of new medicines.

After the coffee break, participants can choose between two in-depth sessions.

Session 1: Digital healthcare and AI: from data to clinical practice

Curates and moderated by Koen Kas (Healthskouts). Gilles Jourquin (CEO of Newpharma) opens the session with insights from his experience managing a large-scale digital pharmacy. This is followed by a discussion with Vincent Keunen (CEO of Andaman7) on the importance of giving patients control over their medical records. The session concludes with a panel discussion featuring Sebastiaan Engelborghs (founder of Bru-BRAIN), Guy Nagels (Translate AD / AI for Health) and Padin Fazelian (Erasmus University College Brussels).

Session 2: Low Tech, High Touch: person-centered care in practice

Curated and modearated by Sofie Bekaert (King Baudouin Foundation) through the 8CTP community. Four sector representatives, Nathalie Lambrechts (We Are), Leo Exter (Hack Healthcare) and Inge Tency (Odisee University of Applied Sciences, Te Vroeg project) present concrete examples from the field. Véronique Peters (Flemish Government), Annick Dermine (Director, Huis voor Gezondheid) and Alexandra Coppieters (Gibbis) bring the perspective of public policy.

Your registration also gives you access to a choice of Fast Tracks. Registration for the Fast Tracks will open at a later stage, and registered participants will receive an email to indicate their preference.
