'En mode Détermination' : Power, influence and conviction

An investor, a cultural strategist, and a diplomat compare notes on what it takes to lead across very different worlds.

The second session of “In Determination Mode”, co-curated by TheMerode and Darby Lubamba Conseil, in partnership with Rothschild & Co, brings together three personalities who exercise influence from strikingly different positions.

Binta Telemans, Wahiba “Waya” Yachou, and Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes represent three distinct forms of leadership, spanning investment, cultural strategy, and diplomacy. Their journeys reveal how determination takes shape when navigating complex environments, creating opportunities, and making decisions with long-term impact.

Together, they will explore what it means to stay the course when the path is uncertain, the responsibilities that come with influence, and how resilience shapes leadership beyond conventional boundaries.

The session will be moderated by Duke Tshomba, co-founder of Duse Magazine, director of A Better Place, and former professional athlete.

Wahiba "Waya" Yachou is an ethnomarketing expert who helps organisations better understand and engage with diverse audiences. Her work sits at the intersection of marketing, culture, and social innovation, challenging businesses to move beyond surface-level diversity and build genuine connection with communities that are too often overlooked. She is also the co-founder of Taksera with Hena, a cultural project developed with her grandmother that explores the transmission of heritage between generations. Through her practice, she demonstrates that understanding identity is not a niche specialism but a core strategic capability.

Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes is the French Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium. With a distinguished diplomatic career built across numerous French institutions and representations around the world, he brings deep experience in international dialogue and multilateral cooperation to his current role. His work is characterised by a commitment to building bridges between public institutions and private actors, and by a belief in the power of sustained, rigorous engagement to shape outcomes at a European and global level.
