Art Matters: Freemason architecture and Taiwanese serviettes

A conversation with  Taiwanese, Brussels-based  artist Michael Lin, hosted by Kendell Geers

Drawing on themes of memory, identity, and cultural heritage, Michael Lin's practice blurs the boundaries between art, architecture, design, and everyday life. By reinterpreting decorative motifs rooted in Taiwanese domestic culture, he transforms familiar patterns into powerful reflections on history, migration, and collective experience. 

For his exhibition Tea Towels and Serviettes, opening in September at La Loge in Ixelles, Michael Lin transforms the former Masonic temple in its entirety into a site-specific installation that engages with the building’s architectural language and the symbolic narratives embedded in its history.

In this Art Matters Lunch, Kendell Geers welcomes Michael Lin and Wim Waelput, Director of La Loge in Brussels, for a conversation exploring the intersections between Taiwanese art, ornament, architecture, and cultural identity. Together, they will discuss how artistic practices can transform shared spaces, reveal hidden histories, and create new forms of dialogue across cultures.

Michael Lin

Michael Lin is an internationally acclaimed Taiwanese artist living and working in Brussels. Born in Tokyo, he was raised between Taiwan and the United States before studying art in Paris. There he developed a signature style that treats beauty not as decoration but as a serious artistic and conceptual proposition elevating patterns often dismissed as domestic or commercial craft into ambitious works that command entire architectural spaces. His art turns away from painting as an object of contemplation, inviting viewers instead to enter the work itself by sitting, walking, or lounging across painted floors and environmental platforms. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila (2016), Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2019), Museo Jumex, Mexico City (2020), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2022).

Wim Waelput

Wim Waelput is a curator and the director of La Loge in Brussels, a platform for contemporary art, architecture, and theory, a position he has held since 2020. Previously, he founded and directed KIOSK, the contemporary art space at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent, where he curated more than forty exhibitions between 2006 and 2020. Waelput also teaches as a guest lecturer at several art schools and universities and regularly serves on acquisition committees, juries, and advisory boards in the field of contemporary art.

Kendell Geers is a contemporary artist. His work confronts universal themes of love, resilience, and hope, driven by his belief that the act of making art is what defines humanity itself. In times of social crisis and political extremism, his work challenges audiences to consider how art can build bridges and restore a sense of shared humanity. Extending this vision, Geers hosts the Art Matters tables at TheMerode. Bringing together performance, philosophical inquiry, and community engagement, Art Matters embodies his conviction that art is not a passive pursuit but an active force for change. At its heart lies the idea that art changes the world, one perception at a time.
