Current exhibition: PETER LINDBERGH. HORS CHAMP

Every photograph by Peter Lindbergh holds a story that extends beyond the frame. A suspended emotion, a breath, a silent thought. A gaze that does not seek the camera but seems to follow something invisible.

For Lindbergh (1944–2019), what matters is never simply what is shown, but what quietly emerges. What exists beyond the image itself. Far removed from the artifices of fashion and the fascination with clothing or celebrity, the German photographer transformed portraiture into a profoundly human territory.

Throughout the work of Peter Lindbergh, who consistently stated that “beauty is truth”, faces wear their lines like stories. Hands reveal as much as eyes and bodies become a language of their own. Every photograph invites us to encounter a person — and history, before an icon.

The landscapes that run throughout his work continue this same pursuit of truth. Industrial wastelands, windswept shorelines, steel-grey skies: these settings are never mere backdrops. They carry the memory of those who inhabited them, the traces of labour and endeavour, and the enduring dialogue between force of mankind and force of nature. They become silent witnesses to the stories that the portraits invite us to imagine.

PETER LINDBERGH. HORS CHAMP challenges visitors to look behind the image and outside the frame. To explore that invisible space where emotions are born, where light reveals more than it illuminates, and where shadows uncover the essence of a human being. An exhibition that invites us to see what cannot be shown, and to feel what can never truly be captured.

ABOUT THE PETER LINDBERGH FOUNDATION

From its inception, Peter Lindbergh wished for his Foundation to carry on his singular and everlasting stance on fashion photography, as testified by an extensive œuvre spanning over four decades.

After his passing, the Peter Lindbergh Foundation remained focused on documenting, preserving and presenting the work of Peter Lindbergh, which will include his earliest pieces as a conceptual artist.

The Peter Lindbergh Foundation aims to further bring Lindbergh’s photographic legacy to light, both as an artisan and as a visionary. Future missions will consist of supporting emerging talents from diverse fields and collaborating with established artistic foundations internationally.
