About the artist (1944-2019)

Born in Poland and raised in Germany, Peter Lindbergh began his career in Düsseldorf before moving to Paris in the late 1970s. He went on to collaborate with the world’s leading fashion magazines, becoming one of the defining photographers of his generation.

Peter Lindbergh transformed photography with his raw, cinematic black-and-white images. From iconic Vogue covers to the rise of the supermodels, his distinctive vision redefined beauty and left a lasting mark on fashion.

About the exhibition

PETER LINDBERGH. HORS-CHAMP challenges visitors to look behind the image and outside the frame. To explore that invisible space where emotions are born, where light reveals more than it illuminates, and where shadows uncover the essence of a human being. An exhibition that invites us to see what cannot be shown, and to feel what can never truly be captured.

The unprecedented choice of medium extends Peter Lindbergh’s pursuit of truth beyond the image itself, into the very material on which it appears. Printed on soft, uncoated white paper, without finish, frame or mounting, the photographs are stripped of the conventions and preciousness traditionally associated with exhibition photography. Nailed directly to the wall, they retain something immediate, fragile and almost provisional — closer to a working print, a page, or an image encountered in the intimacy of the studio than to an untouchable museum object.

 

About the Peter Lindbergh Foundation

From its inception, Peter Lindbergh wished for his Foundation to carry on his singular and everlasting stance on fashion photography, as testified by an extensive œuvre spanning over four decades.

After his passing, the Peter Lindbergh Foundation remained focused on documenting, preserving and presenting the work of Peter Lindbergh, which will include his earliest pieces as a conceptual artist.

The Peter Lindbergh Foundation aims to further bring Lindbergh’s photographic legacy to light, both as an artisan and as a visionary. Future missions will consist of supporting emerging talents from diverse fields and collaborating with established artistic foundations internationally.
