About the artist

Marina Abramović (b. 1946, Belgrade) is widely regarded as a pioneer of performance art. Since the 1970s, her practice has used duration, endurance and direct encounter with the audience to explore presence, vulnerability and the relationship between artist and viewer.

Landmark works, from Rhythm 0 (1974) and Balkan Baroque (1997), for which she was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, to The Artist Is Present at MoMA (2010), have redefined the possibilities of performance art and established her as one of the most influential living artists.

In 2026, marking her 80th birthday, Abramović became the first living woman artist to be honoured with a major exhibition at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. Presented during the 61st Venice Biennale, Transforming Energy brings iconic and new works into dialogue with the museum’s Renaissance masterpieces.

In 2025, Abramović visited TheMerode as a guest of Art Matters for a special conversation with South African artist Kendell Geers, exploring the transformative power of art, performance and human connection.

About the exhibition

Presented by TAEX, this digital exhibition explores Abramović’s work, philosophy and artistic practice through a selection of digital artworks from her ART and METHOD series, part of Marina Abramović Element, her ongoing project reimagining performance art in digital form.

For an artist whose work has long centered on the physical presence of the body and the direct encounter between artist and audience, the digital realm opens up a new space for participation. Fundamental themes of her practice, including presence, endurance and awareness, are translated into an immersive format, inviting visitors to experience her ideas beyond the boundaries of physical performance.
