Satish Kumar, former monk and one of the leading lights of the UK's spirituality and ecology movements shares with us his reflection and wisdom.

We are deeply honored to welcome life-long peace activist, award-winning leading ecologist and internationally-renowned speaker, Satish Kumar to TheMerode.

Satish will be sharing with our members his beliefs about spirituality and his personal vision for safeguarding our increasingly fragile planet.

Greatly moved by the teachings of Gandhi, Satish embarked on a 12 000-kilometre journey for peace; he walked from New Delhi to Washington DC via Moscow, Paris and London at the height of the Cold War to deliver tea to the leaders of the world’s four nuclear powers.

Former monk, Satish Kumar has been inspiring global change for over 50 years. He has received several honorary degrees for his work and an international prize for promoting Gandhi’s values. Satish is a well-known author and speaker. He makes regular appearances on podcasts, radio and television shows. He also made a film, “Earth Pilgrim”, for the BBC and has also been interviewed by the singer Annie Lennox.

Satish says: “The most important task at the moment is to make peace with ourselves, peace with all people and peace with our Mother Earth. In the context of the conflict in Ukraine, working for peace is the most pressing challenge of our time".

Sixty years after his incredible journey, Satish will be speaking to us about the importance of transcending our narrow national, political and religious differences and finding common ground.

Producer and director Shelley William says: “If there is any journey that embodies and inspires the sort of change we need in the world now, it is Satish Kumar’s”.

This is a unique opportunity for TheMerode members to meet with Satish.

Born in India and now living in England, Satish Kumar left his family home at the age of 9 to become a Jain monk. In his 20s, he undertook a peace-pilgrimage from India to America in the name of nuclear disarmament. Remarkably, he didn’t take any money with him and depended on the goodwill and kindness of others to make this journey.

Satish co-founded Schumacher College in South Devon in the UK as well as founding the Resurgence Trust, an educational charity that seeks to create a just future for everyone. He is the editor emeritus of “Resurgence and Ecologist” magazine.

His autobiography, “No Destination”, first published by Green Books in 1978, has sold over 50,000 copies. He is the author of “You Are, Therefore I am: A Declaration of Dependence, The Buddha and the Terrorist, Earth Pilgrim, Soil, Soul, Society and Elegant Simplicity”. He has also been the guiding spirit behind a number of now internationally respected ecological and educational ventures.

Over the years, Satish has regularly contributed to BBC Radio 4’s “Thought for the Day” and has appeared as a guest on “Desert Island Discs”. He featured in BBC2’s Natural World Series – “Earth Pilgrim: A Spiritual Journey into the Landscape of Dartmoor”.

In recognition of his commitment to animal welfare and compassionate living, Satish was elected vice-president of the RSPCA. In 2014, he was appointed an Oxfam UK Ambassador and is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Gross National Happiness Centre of Bhutan.

Satish has been awarded Honorary Doctorates at the University of Lancaster, the University of Exeter, the University of Suffolk, the University of Wales, and the University of Plymouth. He also received the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for promoting Gandhian values outside of India.

Satish continues to teach, run workshops, and write about reverential ecology, holistic education and voluntary simplicity and is a much sought-after international speaker and author.
