Léon Spilliaert (1881 – 1946) is one of the most famous Belgian symbolist painters and graphic artists.

His early work, already Symbolist in style was informed by his readings of writers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Maurice Maeterlinck. He worked for Edmond Deman in Brussels, a publisher of symbolist writers, whose work Spilliaert was to illustrate. In 1904 Spilliaert stayed in Paris, where he was on the fringe of Picasso’s circle and discovered the work of Munch and Toulouse-Lautrec, whose influences he acknowledged. He continued to spend most winters in Paris to keep in touch with the city’s cultural life.

His best-known works are The Absinthe Drinker (1904), The Self-Portrait (1908), Moonlight and Lights (1909), The Pursuit (1910), The Royal Park in Brussels (1917) and The Tunnel (1935). Today you can admire some of his works in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Mu.ZEE and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, where a major retrospective for the artist was recently held in 2020: Léon Spilliaert: Light and solitude, curated by Anne Adriaens-Pannier.

Anne Adriaens-Pannier, doctor in art history, honorary curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels, has been working on the catalogue raisonné of Léon Spilliaert’s work since 1995. Following the major retrospective in Brussels in 2006, she has organised numerous thematic exhibitions at the Spilliaert House in Ostend. In 2020, London, at the Royal Academy, and Paris, at the Musée d’Orsay, hosted a large group of works. Today, a retrospective exhibition is taking place in Lausanne: Léon Spilliaert, with the North Sea.
